A well-maintained metal roof can last 50 to 60 years; in most cases, it should outlast the solar power system itself.

Construction Canada published an article in their October 2016 issue titled Pairing Solar Panels with Metal Roofs.

This article does a great job detailing they ways a standing seam steel roof and photovoltaic panels can work together to deliver a sustainable and energy-efficient solution for green buildings. The top reasons for choosing a steel roof when using solar panels in the article are:

  1. A standing seam steel roof has a live expectancy greater than the solar panels so you will not need to remove the panels to repair or replace the roof before the useful-life of the panels is complete.
  2. The roof itself is a sustainable material with high recycled content in the roof and steel is 100% recyclable at the end of its life.
  3. There are no penetrations made in the roof when using special clips to install the solar panels on a standing seam steel roof. No penetrations means no opportunities for leaks to develop.
